Michael Ramsden (1947-2016)

Buried Treasure, 1989

mixed media on canvas, signed, titled, dated verso ‘Michael Ramsden, Buried Treasure, 1989’

Ultramrine depths. Buddhist horizons.
An ominous trio of symbols untethered from their origins, floating in ultramarine space, crowned by an orange halo of Thai buddhist sunrise. Late friend and artist Michael Ramsden’s most mysterious work. He began as a figurative surrealist in Blackheath, married to Jenny Kee, then moved to Berlin and abstraction with a transitional stay in in Thailand, which inspired this work. It intrigued me when I first saw it in Michael’s Berlin studio. The fascination remains.
