Geoffrey Proud (1946-2022)
Girl with Modigliani, 1981mixed media, signed and dated l.r.c. ‘Proud ’81’
Eyes of a Poet’s Daughter.
The eyes have it. I was fascinated by this reverse-painted perspex and gold leaf portrait and acquired it, without knowing the artist or his subject. I later discovered the portrait was of the daughter of the writer Dorothy Hewett, whose work I had directed. In a further co-incidences, Dorothy would later become the subject of Geoffrey Proud’s 1990 Archibald Prize-winning portrait of the poet and playwright.
