see James Mollison, A Singular Vision, OUP, Melbourne, 1989, p 76 for other You Yangs gouaches, and also Patrick McCaughey, Fred Williams, Murdoch Books, 2008, plates 67-71 for related works, Mollison remembers driving Fred Williams to the You Yangs in the winter of 1962. The artist's concern was to explore, within an Australian context, the experience of looking down from an eminence at the flat surrounding country, which seems to climb up the picture plane. This important gouache, probably painted on site, relates most closely to the etching 'You Yangs Pond' (James Mollison, Fred Williams Etchings, Sydney, 1968, no 207). It can also be broadly read as a study for the three major You Yangs oils of 1963, illustrated in both the above References
