Composer Richard Meale’s operatic adaptation of Patrcick White’s mighty novel, set to a libretto by David Malouf was first staged at the 1986 Adelaide Festival. It became the first Australian opera to enter the repertoire of Opera Australia, where it played successive seasons in Sydney and Melbourne and was broadcast nationally by ABC-TV.
