UPCOMING GALLERY EXHIBITION
Matthew Martin | Shunga
"Three months ago Sam Christie asked me to paint icons on the outside of the men’s and women's toilet doors of his and Jonathan Barthelmess's new Japanese restaurant Cho Cho San in Potts Point. It was a great project, I drew countless and mostly inappropriate pictures before arriving at the butterfly and rooster that I painted on the doors the doors the day before the restaurant opened. This rekindled my love of Shunga, and I began to make new drawings for myself. These are the drawings in this show. Sex, humour, and the sheer joy of making those lines on paper."
Matthew Martin was born in 1952 in Broken Hill and grew up in Adelaide.
In 1981 he moved to Sydney where he drew cartoons for The Sydney Morning Herald. In 1990 he moved to New York freelancing as an illustrator and cartoonist for all the major US newspapers and magazines, his drawings appearing regularly in Time magazine, Rolling Stone, the Village Voice and The New York Times.
After more than a decade in New York he returned to Sydney with his girlfriend and their son. In Sydney he has worked as a cartoonist for The Times (London), once more for The Sydney Morning Herald, and has contributed cartoons to The New Yorker.
Matthew carries at all times a pocket sketchbook and a Japanese brush pen. He has exhibited widely since returning to Sydney, been a finalist in the Dobell Prize for Drawing and had a sell out show of drawings at Damien Minton Gallery. Matthew has created posters for concerts and festivals, made animations for rock videos, illustrated books for adults and children, and across seventeen years drew a hundred and fifty T-shirt images for Mambo. This winter he painted icons on the men’s and women’s toilet doors at Cho Cho and he is currently working on a children’s book that will be published by Penguin in 2015.
Please join us for the opening of Shunga at Shapiro Gallery on Saturday 13 September from 2pm. 162 Queen Street, Woollahra NSW
