Andrew Shapiro is Managing Director of Shapiro Auctioneers Australia. His career in the auction industry spans 30 years, from bases in New York, London and Sydney. In 1984, Mr Shapiro joined Phillips New York, where he established his reputation as a leading specialist in 19th and 20th Century Fine and Decorative Arts and became a senior vice-president. In 1990 he arrived in Australia and introduced auction sales for Phillips Australia. Mr Shapiro was profiled in the international publication, Art and Auction (Nov 2000) as the progressive leader in the Australian auction industry. In 2001 Andrew Shapiro led the management buy-out of Phillips International Auctioneers from Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy across Australia. Over the next seven years Shapiro Auctioneers has confirmed its position in the auction industry as a leader in Australian and International Art, Aboriginal Art, 20/21 Century Design, Traditional Furniture and Decorative Art in particular English and European Silver and Objets d'vertu. Significant one owner collections have highlighted many of the past years including the K R Bernard Smith Collection, The Property of A Gentleman, the L Richard Smith Collection, the New Collection and many others. Record prices in all areas of 20th Century Australian and International Design for silver, glass, furniture and books as well as the highest prices recorded for European sculpture and painting keep Shapiro Auctioneers in the forefront of buyers and sellers.
Rohan Hawthorn

Rohan Hawthorn is the General Manager of Shapiro Auctioneers and a specialist in Australian and International Fine Art. Rohan's career in the auction industry spans 15 years, beginning his career at Goodman Auctions and progressing to the role of junior specialist at Bonhams Auctioneers. At Bonhams he was responsible for significant one owner collections including those of Lindsay Fox, John Laws, the Estate of Rudy Komon as well as the liquidation of MG Rover. After leaving the auction industry Rohan was manager at Andrew Crawford Gallery before starting his own consultancy agency, his clients including Tim Storrier who he worked with to assist in cataloguing and managing the artist's private and historical collection. Since joining the team at Shapiro Auctioneers in 2009 Rohan has built the fine art department and curated auctions of numerous collections including the Estate of Ray Hughes, the Estate of Darcy Ryan, The Barbara Sheridan Donnay and the late Gilbert J. Donnay Collection, the Estate of Andrew Curtis, The Duncan and Sally Mount Collection and major corporate collections from The Royal Bank of Scotland, Corrs Chambers Westgarth and PWC.
William Cooke

William Cooke

Gallery and Installations Manager
William Cooke is the Contemporary Art specialist and Gallery Manager at Shapiro Auctioneers, Sydney. He is responsible for cataloguing and researching works that are consigned to the contemporary art department for auction and private treaty. In addition to William's passion for exciting examples of mid-century design and lighting, he is also a practising artist and has regular exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne. William received his Bachelor of Visual Arts (Hons) from Sydney College of the Arts in 2011.

Matthew Zamel

Matthew Zamel

Fine Jewellery and Watches Matthew is a GAA certified and experienced Diamond trader, advisor and agent. As the Owner and Director of LE MAZ Pty Ltd, Matthew offers customers his 15 years’ experience in the diamond business along with strong credibility and a distinct family heritage steeped in diamond trading and jewellery. Based in Sydney for over a decade, Matthew was the Head Diamond Grader and Laboratory Manager for the Diamond Certification Laboratory of Australia. In this role Matthew was at the forefront of Australia’s most reputable diamond laboratory where he learnt from industry experts and harnessed his technical skills and trading abilities. Prior to his Sydney move, Matthew worked his way up to the Head of Diamond Branded Products for Zamel’s Jewellers, Australia’s largest jewellery retailer. In a return to his hometown of Adelaide, South Australia, Matthew brings his breadth of knowledge and experience in diamonds, international diamond contacts and his approachable nature to help customers secure their dream diamond.


Richard Madley FNAVA

Richard has over thirty five years in the auction industry in the UK and New York. He is probably best known in the world of cricket as the IPL Auctioneer – where he conducts ground breaking auctions to an international audience. In addition he is a regular expert on BBC TV’s “Bargain Hunt” – the UK’s most popular daytime TV programme. Mr. Madley is based outside Bath and is available to undertake valuations of any items which have an Australian story or provenance. In particular he specialises in searching out significant examples of Australian Art and Silver, as well as Australian sporting and cultural ephemera and books. Over the last five years important works by Sidney Nolan, Emanuel Phillips Fox, Ethel Carrick Fox, Margaret Preston, Ethel Spowers and Brett Whiteley have resurfaced in English country houses.
Suzanne Playfoot

Suzanne Playfoot

Melbourne Representative Suzanne is Shapiro’s representative in Melbourne. Her career in the arts also spans 30 years, having worked at Deutscher Fine Art; Niagara, Karen Lovegrove and Gould Galleries; the Australian Print Workshop, and Galerie Farideh Cadot in Paris. She ran a successful 20th-century design and art consultancy business for twenty years. Suzanne also holds a Bachelor of Art, a Graduate Diploma of Education and a B2 Diploma of French from the Alliance Francaise. Suzanne spent seven years in the fashion industry working for designer Sally Browne and continues to do freelance work as a stylist. In her brief time with Shapiro’s Suzanne secured a significant one-owner estate of paintings and some notable 20th century design objects and designer fashion items.
