Rare Lanyon lifts Shapiro

Local buyers spotted an opportunity when Shapiro offered a rare abstract landscape by the British painter Peter Lanyon at its fine art sale last week. White Square New Jersey, a gouache on paper from 1962, went for $44,400 on an estimate of $6000 to $9000. This result includes a buyer's premium of 20 per cent while the estimate does not. Lanyon's work is regularly offered in London – last year his painting Green Place made $205,758 [£110,500] with Sotheby's there – but this is believed to be the first time his work has been put up for auction in Australia. The painting had been in a private collection in Newcastle since its purchase from Sydney's Art of Man Gallery in 1962.
