Got a Light?

A MAN SHOULD HAVE AN OCCUPATION OF SOME KIND, AS LADY BRACKNELL SAID, AND DUNHILL MADE THE BEST EQUIPMENT FOR THE BUSINESS OF SMOKING.

Lighters

If you must smoke, you should at least look good doing it. While

that might seem like a contradiction to some, consider the

gentlemanly accoutrements that once went with the filthy habit:

the velvet smoking jackets, the chic cigarette cases, the stylish

ashtrays – and let’s not forget that every fashionable man needs

a quality lighter. But 35 quality lighters? That’s more than an

accessory, it’s an obsession.

Later this month a collection of 35 vintage Dunhill lighters will

go under the hammer at Shapiro Auctioneers. The lighters have

been acquired over decades by a private Australian collector

and carry pre-auction estimates of $800 to $15,000. According

to Andrew Shapiro, managing director of Shapiro Auctioneers,

the collection of Dunhill lighters is thought to be the largest single

owner collection to ever come on to the market.

The collection, which is part of Shapiro’s Fine Jewellery and

Luxury Design sale on October 25, also includes the same

owner’s smaller assortment of lighters from Cartier and Asprey

as well as a floor-stand Dunhill humidor and 22 vintage Rolex

watches. Most of the Dunhill lighters are in 9kt gold and all of

them are in working order.

Dunhill was founded by Alfred Dunhill in 1893 in London

after he inherited his father’s saddlery business. Dunhill soon

started focusing on accessories for the burgeoning automobile

industry under the banner of “Everything But The Motor” and

quickly earned a reputation for luxury goods.

In 1907 Dunhill opened a tobacconist and pipe shop on

Duke Street and along with that came an expertise in lighters.

The company created many innovations in lighters such as flame

protectors to guard against the wind and lighters that could

be lit with one hand. Other Dunhill specialities included lighters

with timepieces built into the body or hidden compartments to

store a gym locker key. This collection includes many signature

designs including one of the famous Aquarium models made

from lucite carved from inside and painted.
