Featherston Still The Favourite

On Wednesday evening 17 August at 6pm, a serious crowd of collectors packed our Woollahra galleries to bid on 20/21 Century Design. Top dollar was paid for all chairs designed by Grant Featherston. The sale included four R160 Contour chairs selling between $3600-$7200 and ranging in colour from chartreuse to royal blue. A rare Featherston Model 53 Elastic Easy Chair realized $10,000.00(ibp) after a bidding battle between two very determined collectors.

Another rare Australian furniture design, the Rondo chair by Gordon Andrews, in original upholstery, went under the hammer at $5856 (ibp). A kidney shape coffee table by Sydney cabinet maker Paul Kafka was highly sought after and sold for $2,070.00(ibp). The iconic Marc Newson “Embryo” chair in black neoprene brought $6,700.00 and his sophisticated “Sci-Fi” white glazed ceramic vase sold for $600.

A classic black marble circular “Tulip” dinging table by Eero Saarinen went out the door at $5850.00. An Arne Jacobsen “Swan” chair in original dark brown leather sold for $3,400 and his elegant “Swan” two seater in black leather brought $8,200.00, both to telephone bidders.

Art glass by Lalique was also in great demand.Five phones ran hot with overseas collectors bidding against Australian buyers. In the end all fourteen lots sold to Australian collectors. The handsome art deco style moulded plaque titled “Masque de Femme” brought $6340.00(ibp) against an estimate of $2000-3000. The early “Faune” vase with original brown staining sold for $4640.00 and the black “Tanzania Zebra” vase went for $3050.00(ibp) against an estimate of $800-1,200.

95% sold by value, 85% sold by lot.

The next 20/21 C Design auction is scheduled for October 2011.
